Bowei Wang. An Ecological Method for Landscape Architecture

In this article, Ian McHarg examined the significance of the Ecological Method to landscape architecture and how the method can be translated from a rural or agrarian setting to a metropolitan setting. With many new developments based only on the “criteria of economic determinism” as Landscape Architects we should strive to change the way society views urbanization, hopefully with ecological history in mind. McHarg believed one can better understand a site and properly determine its future program by traveling back to its origin and learning its “physical evolution” the knowledge of how the site came to be. With these invaluable data mapped out it provides Landscape Architects a clear view of how the landscape should be programmed.

The idea of creating an ecological history with ones mind is an interesting one. Its goes back to the conception of landscape and in the form it is view by each individual. And as the mind learns more of a place those conceptions are altered and reevaluated, which in turn can inform decisions.
