Much like the old saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", this writing looks at the landscape in the the eye of different beholders. The author speaks of landscape as nature, the contours, weather, light, season ect. He looks at landscape as habitat, the fields, pastures, woods, villages, cities and suburbs. Another fundamental idea of landscape as a artifact, our ways of modifying the land surface. Landscapes as system he speaks about they many systems and how they function. Landscape as problem, looks at the results of our overuse and abuse, landscape as wealth, things that affects the value of the land. Landscape as ideology is the translation of principles into tangible features. Landscape as history is the historian or the chronological record of the land. Landscape as place speaks from an individual standpoint, encompassing all his/her interests. In summary, landscapes tell a lot about us as the users, what we honor, hold as valuable, and what doesn't matter.

I agree. Landscapes effect everyone differently. It is imperative that landscape architects design with the history of what the land once was in mind. otherwise more harm can be done than good.
