Dennis Doxtater explores the method of natural and built patterns and their statistical value of design through the palaces on Crete. The Minoan palaces were built in accordance to their relation to the natural settings on the island. Their focus was more Intensive, meaning they originated their design from the landscape as distinct from extending out into it. The intensive view focuses more on social integration rather than the extension view of authority like the Greeks. The Minoans were symbolically and ritually structured around the Gods who lived in the mountains and natural elements and were integrated socially.
The Intension view is what we as Landscape Architects should attempt or strive for when designing. We have to find ways to connect man with nature and do so by pointing them out to him. We can do this in many ways like creating view sheds or like the Minoans and finding the geometries to line him up in the right direction towards the elements.
