This article looks not only at the history and early examples of overlays but discusses the projects when they were used, their ideas and pro's and con's. After reading this article you can start to understand the importance given to overlays and really what the achieve. Over time people have taken this technique and tried to perfect it and make it less time consuming by putting it on computer. They did find a way to do the same thing the computer does but by hand for presentational purposes. The hand-drawn way takes you into the analytical phase like no other technique and we all as landscape architects shouldn't stray from this step.
