This article is the summary of the life of a revolutionary landscape architect icon. His concepts of nature, design and science in his works that include books, lectures, articles etc are being dissected into truths, deceptions, exaggerations and exploitations. Nonetheless, he was a man that believed in the accuracy of science although we know like history, science too is ever changing as new ideas become fact. He had many contributions to the field other than his texts. He augmented the map overlay method, developed the scientific theory called 'creative fitting' that spoke of adaption, evolution and stability of natural systems. His ideals are challenged to this day as importance or not to our field.

Without the basis of "mapping and over laying" of ideas on paper, I would be lost. I become familiar with my designs by learning the curves of the natural areas' shape and toying with them. I need to "feel" my way through the design process and overlaying allows me to do just that.
