This article brings the accuracy of maps into question. Maps, we learn, are not actually pictures taken of the earth from satellite; at least not in the traditional sense. Maps are the product of massive amounts of data collected by remote sensing technologies placed on satellites, that are constantly scanning the surface of the earth. The scans are then pixelated and fixed together. When this spherical data is transferred into traditional planer maps the data becomes distorted. Thus, measured distance and coordinates are not exactly precise. With the various types of map projections displaying information differently, it is important to choose the right map for the accuracy needed. Maps are almost never precisely accurate and can be redrawn and manipulated in order to make them easier to understand and/or for better portrayal of information.
