Sarah Smith_Landscape Planning: Contents and Procedures

Throughout the article, the important tasks of land management and protection are prevalent. The author writes about how the Federal Nature Protection Act establishes goals to promote these tasks. As landscape architects, one of the first components we analyze is the scale of the site in which we are planning. The scale can range from region, state, community and even as small as a single unit of a community. With this being said, we must analyze how our designs will effect the environment of the area and what uses are appropriate for each area. We must bring out the landscape planner within ourselves so we can make greater assessments as to how valuable or sensitive an area of land is. Landscape planning lies at the heart of every construction project, neighborhood master plan, or regional park.

I agree that as landscape architects, we must not only analyze the history of a place and what is already there but to think about how the implementation of the design will affect the land. It is especially important when working at a regional scale because of the large surrounding area the design will affect.

I think we can tie this reading into "The Beholding Eye." We need to understand the different vantage points people have and where their priorities lie, before and during the planning process. While we assess the value and sensitivity of the land we can tie that back into how the user will perceive what we are creating.

Land planning on a large scale can be used to plan for growth in a logical manner while being ecologically conscious, culturally sensitive, and politically neutral. The public sector, such as federal and state governments, can use mandated codes and ordinances to protect the welfare of the common community and its environment. There will always be debate and conflict, but necessary measures must be taken to preserve and protect the landscape.
