Carl Steinitz’s paper, A Framework for Theory Applicable to the Education of Landscape Architects, lays out a detailed hierarchy for instructing students and young design professionals about the design and modeling processes used in landscape architecture, without hindering creativity or design development. Given the foundation of the whos, whats, whens, wheres and whys, designers can then extrapolate an evolving, functional and aesthetically pleasing design as well as phasing for implementation. In providing the framework as a canvas, designers are allowed to arrive at different conclusions from those of their peers and instructors; “Theory is what we teach them when they walk in the door”, Carl Steinitz. The development of an individuals own design language is often as critical as the design itself. Diversity and individuality in the design process along with a strong environmental awareness, essentially, are what create the foundation from which a design professional can begin.
