Elizabeth Bowie: "On Values" Revisited: A Judeo-Christian Theology of Man and Nature

Denig claims a significant aspect of Ian McHarg's publishing, Design with Nature, requires redress. McHarg's view point holds that Judeo-Christianity has poisoned the western civilization into believing man is superior to nature. In his mind, this has led to the dismantling of our environment and surrounding. Denig states boldly that his chapter "On Values" is misleading to the general public, especially those not familiar with biblical theology. She goes on to debate the content of that chapter sighting Biblical references primarily from the book of Genesis, "The story of Creation."
The first versus in the Bible speaks of God's creation of the Earth and of man as the steward of the land. This is where McHarg has taken several negative liberties as to the interpretation of the direct translation of Biblical context. The Bible was originally written in the native Hebrew text and translated into Greek and Latin and then on to the differing languages of today's society. Here-in lies the problem. Each language has several different meanings to a given linguistic unit. The word dominion is used as a prime example.
All in all, Denig paves the way to "correctly" claim that man is actually a steward of nature. It is our duty bestowed upon us from God above to care for His "wilderness." He has given us free will and with that, the opportunity to choose just how we might do this.
