Jordan Boan, "Protection of the Environment in Islam"

This article outlines how the actions between man and his environment should occur according to interpretations of Islamic writings. One issue that clearly comes to the forefront is that this relation is symbiotic; both sides survive based on the decisions and actions of man. It is logical, then, that whenever new developments are designed they should take into account the impact it will have on the environment. This seems like such an obvious consideration, but it seems as if the movement toward wholly ecologically compatible design is a relatively contemporary concept. The importance of this article is that it describes to the followers of Islam the necessity of these actions as following God’s word.

Essentially, landscape architects need to remember to research cultures in order to respect and provide accurate designs of the landscape. It's interesting that these articles talk about the impacts of culture on a landscape. As students, we've barely scratched the surface to consider religions as a factor, let alone a cultural factor in designing the landscape. It may be impossible to please every culture, but the main idea is to protect the ecology of the landscape.
