The subject of this article by Lip Evelyn is luopan and feng shui. The luopan is an “instrument for the divination of orientations of buildings or tombstones.” Luopan represent ways for the heavens and the earth to be harmonized. The methods of luopan van change with the person writing the manual. The application of these methods, feng shi, is not definite. These guidelines are used to create spaces that harmonize with nature. As landscape architects our guidelines come from our analysis. Like in feng shui it is important to study the site and how the design will fit into its surroundings.
