Ian McHarg’s work will always be appreciated for its influence on contemporary landscape architecture. The method of overlaying maps, data, and other inventory is still a vital aspect of the design process. There are some critics, however, that take issue with McHarg’s methods as being too much of a hard science, a lack of artistic expression, and the role of landscape architects as analysts rather than creators. To me, the formula developed by McHarg should be used to inform a design, not manifest it. A strong base of logic and scientifically informed conceptual framework are necessary to make a design relevant to its clients. Once this foundation is set, then a designer can use artistic methods to shape the character and voice of a “place.”

As Landscape Architects, we definitely need to appreciate the time and dedication of McHarg because now we can use data that is already present. The layering aspect should affect inventory and analysis, but not necessarily the creative aspect of the design. It is important to have scientific data to back up a concept and design idea, or else it seems as if designer did not take special care with the design.
I agree that method of overlaying maps is significant part of design in this rapid changing world. I think what is important with the collected date is that We should be able to communicate clients with the information which scientifically organized. That is also our role to explain processes of design to the communicate with relavent data.
I think Landscape architecture cannot exist without one or the other. Without detailed over-laping of analysis landscape architects cannot experience the site and later design or redesign it effectively.
