The need for overlays was eventually accomplished by problem solvers. Different base maps at the same scale were produced for comparison, which was then followed by making these maps on transparent paper, to layer them on top of each other. Doing so helped with a synthesis and interpretation of the data given. Hand drawn overlays warrant limitations. It is both time consuming and can become muddled. To get a better understanding it is needed to work with both the computer and by hand. Thus the combination of the two has been the standard for working in analysis. Beginning with hand drawn maps we can grasp the map tangibly and then have the flexibility to change and re visit the work later, in digital form.
Translating this to what we do as students, it's nice to start off with hand drawn analysis and layers to get a start on the thinking process and eventual design process. Transferring it into digital form looks cleaner and easier to present to the client. Hand drawn is nice because it is a fast way to get ideas across, and digital is nice to edit fast when we need to revisit and rework the plan. There is a definite advantage to using both.

I personally enjoy working with and overlaying maps by hand because it evokes free flow thinking. It isn't quite so permanent in the sense that it can be overlaid with trash paper to be fixed. On the other hand, if you work too much by hand, the results tend to vary unlike the computer and the drawings tend to become muddy. Using the computer to render analysis maps takes longer than rendering by hand, but the outcome is more precise. The scale of the maps can be easily changed within seconds, and zooming into the maps help draw precise lines.
Hand drawn overlays are definitely quicker to complete initially than computer generated. I find that the ideas i have originally are far surpassed by other, better ideas because i can work so quickly and get across many different ideas. Starting with the computer makes you feel overwhelmed by the time constraint and only have time to create one rendition; and in doing so miss out on the opportunity to explore different avenues of thought.
