Feng-Shui is a traditional Chinese practice used to harmonize people with their environment. This article compared the settlement of prehistoric Americans in the Southwest. Patterns have been found with settlements often near canyons with mountain range views avoiding cold winds and having an accessible water body. Most followed this basic necessity of shelter/protection from the winds and water accessibility, but there were few that did, however, settled on cliffs or unfit sites. While we may not understand why they settled in such unfavorable sites, we should not be quick to judge. Who knows, it may have been the best line of defense. There is probably a reason for choosing the site that correlates with the same principles as previously states.

It is interesting that this article compares prehistoric Americans in the Southwest to Feng-shui, a Chinese ideal. It comes back to the idea that most cultures believe in some form of karma, and there is a harmony to life.
We may never know exactly what the prehistoric American cultures were thinking, but we can interpret and learn from the settlement patterns of prehistoric civilizations, either being positive or negative.
It is also interesting how two very different cultures settled in very similar patterns, though separated by time and space. We should learn from this correlation and apply these logical processes to how we plan our designs. Certain criteria must be met in order for a site to provide human comfort in the environment in which it's set. Also, you pointed out that some sites went against the trend and settled in less areas less than ideal. We can learn from this that we must study our site and framework closely because the most obvious location may not be the best situated for our design.
